About Dr. Les

Dr. Les Alsterlund

Optometrist

My story begins when I was two years old and diagnosed with amblyopia, or “lazy eye.” I got my first pair of glasses and started wearing a patch. With frequent trips to the eye doctor throughout my childhood, perhaps I was born to be a developmental optometrist!

While in optometry school, I focused my time on learning behavioral optometry from my mentor, Dr. Jeff Getzell, as an intern in his office in Evanston, Illinois. After graduating from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1999 and moving back home to the Twin Cities, I went right into a practice providing vision therapy. I completed the postgraduate training through the Optometric Extensions Program Foundation and then went on to receive my fellowship with the Optometric Vision Development & Rehabilitation Association (OVDRA) in 2007. FOVDR is a board certification awarded to optometrists demonstrating expertise in vision development, vision therapy, and vision rehabilitation.

In 2006, I was called to active duty with the Army Reserves, where I worked with soldiers recovering from traumatic brain injuries. That pivotal experience inspired me to expand my focus into functional optometry and concussion rehabilitation. Today, I continue to help patients with lingering visual symptoms restore lost abilities and confidence in their daily lives.

In 2019, I was introduced to NeuroVisual Medicine and trained under Dr. Debby Feinberg. Since then, I’ve been helping a new group of patients—those suffering from chronic dizziness, balance issues, anxiety, persistent headaches, and neck pain. Many have seen countless specialists and undergone extensive testing, only to be told everything was "normal." These debilitating symptoms often left them feeling hopeless, avoiding driving, and limiting their ability to go out in public places. With the use of therapeutic microprism lenses, they have significantly reduced symptoms and reclaimed their lives. Integrating NeuroVisual Medicine into the clinic has added a missing piece, allowing me to reach patients I couldn't have helped before.

It’s very rewarding work.
